Luo is a professor of architectural history at the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University, Beijing. After completing his PhD in architecture in 2003, he has devoted to the research and protection of Chinese vernacular architecture and traditional villages. The products of his hard work during the past 20 years are over twenty books published from 2007 to present, such as Chinese Ancient Theaters, The Ancient Castles of Yu County, The Xianxia Trail, Traditional Villages: from Concept to Practice, Research and Practice of Vernacular Settlements. He roots his architectural thinking in agricultural civilization, which he thinks is the origin of Chinese culture. He develops his protection working in combination between modernity and tradition, which he thinks is the future of most traditional villages. Among his many practical projects, Xihe Village and Songyang County are two convincing cases.

RESEARCH & PRACTICAL PROJECTS

1. Village Protection. Two villages’ planning and implementation are undertaken since 2013. Among them, Pingtian Village (selected as a typical case of national rural tourism development in 2019 by National Development and Reform Commission), Xihe Village (selected as national eco-culture village in China Eco-Culture Association 2018), and Huanggang Village (selected in the World Heritage tentative list) gave become cases of national influence. Over dozens of village protection and development projects nationwide are presided over, including practice cases of Quanfuzhuang Village in Hani Terrace, Yunyang County, Yunnan Province; Xihe Village in Xin County, Henan Province; Pingtian Village and Jieshou Cillage in Songyang County, Zhejiang Province; Huanggang Village in Liping County, Guizhou Province; Gaoyi Village in Huitong County, Hunan Province; Songkou Town and Overseas Chinese Village in Mei County, Guangdong Province; Baihou Town in Dapu County, Guangdong Province; Zhutouzhai and Yuezhou Village in Yongtai County, Fujian Province; Jiaogong Village and Hongyang Village in Taijiang County, Guizhou Province; Huoshaodian Town in Liuba County, Shanxi Province; Hexi Village in Qinyuan County, Shanxi Province, Dananpo Village in Xiuwu County, Henan Province, etc.

2. Village Vitalization in Songyang County. We promoted village protection in Songyang county, Zhejiang province at a critical moment, helped the county apply for 75 traditional villages, making Songyang county one of the first Chinese traditional village protection and development demonstration counties of Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the People’s Republic of China (MOHURD) and the first traditional village protection and utilization demonstration area of State Administration of Cultural Heritage; Undertook the overall plan for the protection and utilization of traditional villages in Songyang county; Work in Songyang was reported in Foreign policy and the translation was published in Reference News. In 2015, proposed the top-level concept of "county specimens of classical China" for Songyang. Under this guidance, Songyang has become a national sample for village protection.

3. The Establishment of CRCV (Conference For The Revival Of Chinese Villages). In April 2016, it was planned and organized to hold a rural revival forum for the first time in Xihe Village, Xinxian County, Henan Province, sponsored by Tsinghua University's School of Architecture, China Poverty Alleviation Foundation and other institutions, thus creating the working mode of "village meeting": Version 1.0, discovering and realizing the outbreak effect of meeting events;  Version 2.0, to discover and realize the mechanism of meeting events forcing planning and construction, and to solve the problem of difficult landing of village planning that has long troubled the industry. Version 3.0 discovers and realizes the driving effect of conference events on training operations and explores a systematic path for rural revitalization. Nine sessions have been held in villages in different parts of the country, with 350-500 delegates each time, attracting more and more cooperative units to join, resulting in effective linkage effect and becoming the most sustainable influential village industry conference in China.

4. Research of Chinese Vernacular Architecture. China is a large agricultural country with a long history. The variety of its geography and the communication between its different parts also gave great influence to its vernacular architecture. So far the research on vernacular architecture, especially the relation between architecture and social life, is far from enough. Most scholars haven’t realized the value of vernacular culture.

5. As Professor Chen Zhihua said, Chinese Vernacular Architecture is the best historic evidence to eastern agricultural civilization. There are three cultural factors that have made China different from the west: clanism, pantheism and Keju (national exam for selecting officials). These three factors have responses in architecture respectively, which are ancestral halls, temples and educational buildings. Normally, the three types of buildings, which are combined with houses and others, assemble in one village to form an organic cultural system. A village should therefore be a basic unit to research or protect vernacular architecture in China. To collect and study villages in different places, different styles, different economic backgrounds, different ethnic groups and so on, we are then able to establish an integrated spectrum of Chinese Vernacular Architecture and Culture.

6. However, the fact is that we have no time to complete this important job, since China’s modernization comes so fast. Vernacular buildings locate mostly in countryside and with the large number of farmers entering cities as migrant workers, they bring city architecture back to their hometowns then they demolish the old houses to make rooms for the new. In 2006, the central government issued the policy of Building New Countryside. This policy has speeded up the demolishment of old buildings in villages throughout the whole country. A lot of traditional villages had been leveled before they were discovered by scholars.

7. Now we are standing at a critical point. During the next ten years, China will complete the change from traditional to modern. The mission of the scholars of my generation is to study and preserve Chinese vernacular buildings as many as possible.

8. Research Projects from MOHURD. For the long-term cooperation with the Ministry of Housing and Urban-rural Development,  commissioning by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-rural Development, a number of issues related to the protection and utilization of traditional villages are completed; the publication of Typological Collection of Traditional Chinese Dwellings, Analysis and Inheritance of Traditional Architecture in China, etc are participated. 24. Digital Library of SRCA. The Society for Research in Chinese Architecture, established by Zhu Qiqian in 1930, was led by Liang Sicheng and Liu Dunzhen form 1931-1945. This project was a collaborative research processed from 2000-2003 by three departments: School of Architecture, Library of the university and Department of Computer Science. As one of the main members, I was in charge of resource collecting, metadata standards constituting (with librarians) and mark-up regulating Traditional architecture investigation in Hong Kong (twice, 1998 & 2000). Led by Professor Guo Daiheng, I was a member of her team.

25. Research and Practice of Vernacular Settlements is a book that combines the basic research based on settlements with the practical work of the author in the protection and development of villages and towns in recent years, so as to explores the path of the overall research and effective protection of the local settlement heritage. This book is the course material of "Research on Rural Settlement" of School of architecture, Tsinghua University, it is mainly suitable for undergraduates and postgraduates majoring in urban and rural planning, architecture, landscape architecture and other related majors in ordinary colleges and universities for reference study, and it can also be used as a reference book for cultural heritage designers.

26. Reading Chinese Villages is a book that gathers more than 30 article by the author in the Luo Deyin column of WeChat public's "landscape reading". It is roughly divided into four categories. The first is the interpretation of countryside culture. The second is the analysis of practical cases. The third is the reflection and summary of "meeting in the countryside ". The fourth can be said to be another way of case analysis, focusing on the perspective of people. These are all original articles. They are the experiences of the author in the protection, research and rural renaissance of traditional villages summarized through the forum. It has enlightening and guiding significance for the current rural construction and the protection of traditional villages, and is narrated in the way of listening to books in the column of landscape reading, which is concise, interesting and readable.

27. The Xianxia Trail is a 4-year research project that results into 5 books. Xianxia Trail is an overland connection of the Qiantang River to the Min River. These two rivers were most important in history of China next to the Yangtse River and the Yellow River. The trail is 120 kms long and it gave great commercial influence to the towns, villages and temples alongside. These settlements and buildings show us a perspective quite different from what we have known about traditional (and agricultural) China. Xianxia trail is also an extended part of the Ocean Silk Road. The five books were published by Shanghai Sanlian Bookstore.

28. Doctoral dissertation: An Architectural Study on Chinese Ancient Opera-buildings. The dissertation discusses the architectural form of ancient theatres and its historic transition. It also concerns relevant factors in society, economy and religion. Watching drama was an important festival activity in history of China, especially in the Northern Song dynasty (960-1127), when Li-Fang System slacked and urban economy rose.

29. Castles in Yu County is a book that studies the castle-villages in Yu County , which are evidences to the historic conflicts between the agricultural and the nomadic. In the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), given the frequent intrusion from northern nomadic troopers, the Chinese Central government decided to rebuild the Great Wall and adopted the policy of station troops (Tun Jun) so as to protect the capital. The people along the frontiers built a large number of castle-villages for self-defense. In the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), the military function of these castle-villages was weakened while the living and commercial function was more in need. Public buildings of different types and scales, such as temples and opera-buildings, emerged inside and outside the castles. Yu County is the only place that has preserved so many castle-villages and their affiliated buildings in China.

30. Two Ceramic villages: Saningkou & Zhaoxian is a book that studies  two villages of porcelain production. Sanqingkou Village is located in Southeast China while Zhaoxian Village in North China. The villagers lived on porcelain production from about 1700 until 1990s A.D. All kinds of their buildings, including the ancestor hall, the temples, the houses, the kilns, the factories and so on, are disposed according to porcelain production. The comparison between them is interesting and instructive, since they are different in architectural style, production and the social structure.

31. Hani Terraces Villages. Hani people have a long history of living in the Ailao Mountains to the south of Hong River. Since they had never invented text before 1950s, however, their settlements’ history relied only on wizards’ memory and villagers’ oral transferring. This resulted in the difficulty for the scholars nowadays to know the construction and development of a Hani village. In the Quanfu Middle Zhai, a young and modern Hani village that emerged 47 years ago, it is possible for us to interview the early residents who have been living here since the beginning of the village. Based on this, we may analyze in detail its birth and development.
