Tsinghua Architecture Faculty and Students Successfully Conclude Participation in the IFoU Summer School Workshop

Overview

On July 19, 2024, the final presentation of the "International Forum on Urbanism (IFoU) Summer School and Tsinghua University Undergraduate Practical Course Comprehensive Urban-Rural Social Survey and Research' Joint Workshop" (hereinafter referred to as the "Joint Summer School Workshop") was successfully concluded at the Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center (TSEA).

Project Summary

The project, organized by Tsinghua University's School of Architecture, in collaboration with Tarumanagara University, and TSEA, brought together 32 students majoring in architecture and urban planning across four universities in three countries. Under the guidance of Professor Liu Jian and Associate ProfessorLiu Jiayan from Tsinghua, ProfessorJo Santoso from Tarumanagara University, Associate Professor Huang Liling from Taiwan University, Professor Uoosang Yoo from Chonnam National University, and seven teaching assistants, the students embarked on a two-week field study and planning research in Bali, Indonesia.

The students were divided into three groups, each visiting a unique village in Bali (Serangan, Kelecung, Tenganan) to explore community-based tourism development. Their research focused on identifying resources, strengths, challenges, and the community's role in sustainable tourism development.

Activities

The Tsinghua team arrived in Jakarta on July 6, embarking on a two-day urban research exploration. The Joint Summer School Workshop officially commenced on July 8, with introductory village tours and insightful lectures by Professors Liu Jiayan, Jo Santoso, Wita Simatupang, and Huang Liling, covering  community planning in Mainland China, Indonesia, and Taiwan. Additionally, Professors Liu Jian and Miya Irawati delivered lectures on urbanization transitions in China and Indonesia. The students actively engaged in question-and-answer sessions, showcasing their keen interest in community planning and urban-rural development.

From July 11 to July 15, the groups conducted in-depth field research, living with local villagers to gather information via site visits, interviews, focus group discussions, and by experiencing local customs and production methods. They conducted SWOT analyses to devise strategies for community-based tourism.

During the final research and design phase from July 16 to July 18, each group synthesized their findings and formulated planning strategies. On July 19, they presented their results at TSEA, engaging in lively discussions with instructors, representatives from local government, village leaders, and social organizations.The students' exceptional presentations and thorough analyses garnered high praise from both instructors and local representatives.

Achievements

The successful conclusion of the Joint Summer School Workshop provided valuable practical experience for the students. By immersing themselves in urban and rural communities, they developed a deeper understanding of urban sociology and social space research. They learned to apply these theories in real-world settings, enhancing their academic and practical skills.

Working within a multicultural team, students refined their cultural exchange skills and enhanced their teamwork spirit. This interaction broadened their perspectives and improved their adaptability in a global context.

Furthermore, the workshop fostered international academic exchange and contributed to the development of future urban and rural planners. The cross-cultural collaboration sparked innovative ideas and fostered a deeper understanding of sustainable tourism development. The experience enriched students' global vision and humanistic exchange, laying a solid foundation for future international academic activities.
